Panoramic image of mining operation with ore cars, a mining platform, and several water-towers in the background. Measures 34" x 10", with no matte and silver colored wooden frame (35 1/2" x 11 1/2"). Contrast is high, with image that appears to be "stitched" together out of three different photographs. Focus is good to sharp, but varies from left to center to right side. In putting this image together, tears are noted running the length of the photo right and left of center. Multiple tears are noted to the paper backing on the back of the frame. "Colusa Studio, Colusa Calif." printed at lower right. As one of the original 27 counties created by the first state Legislature, Colusa County was established in 1850. While it once covered all of what is now Glenn County and portions of Tehama County, in 1891 Glenn and Colusa counties were split. Named originally after two Mexican land grants, Coluses (1844) and Colus (1845), the original name of the county was Colusi, a word derived from the name of an Indian tribe living on the Sacramento River. Important first's include: 1846, William Bryant first settler; 1849, first mining laws passed; 1862, first newspaper (Weekly Colusa Sun); and 1874, first county map drawn by J.B. DeJarnatt [Ref: cagenweb.com/colusa]. While mining is shown here, this area flourished due to its location on the Southern Pacific Railroad and its agricultural production rather than its mining wealth.
