"Please Send Answer By Wells, Fargo & Co's Express." printed at upper left. From Ernest A. Herting, datelined "Bodie Mono County Cal March 3, 1885," and addressed to "J.A. Orveus, Calico Cal." The letter contains great mining-related content, particularly as it relates to Herting's need for water to work his placer claim. It also expresses great disdain for the local recorder, who happens to be a "Polish Jew." Mr. Herting feels that the Recorder, Louis Lewis, is trying "to trick Atlee out of the shaft" as "he tries to make out that a man by the name of Cochrane relocated said shaft on the 1st of January 1885." Because of this supposedly fraudulent account, Cochrane "wants to take him in partnership and work the shaft - but Atlee sees well through the piece of rascality and I shall not permit it under any circumstances if I can prevent it." Measures 8" x 11", with letter covering both sides of paper. Foldlines and stain at upper left, otherwise very fine.
