Photograph. of Bodie, along with the presence of the Standard Mill, prior to the fire of the late 1890s that burned the mill to the ground. This is a wonderful and rare view of the town and Bodie Hill. Measures 7 1/2" x 4 1/2", mounted on blue matte (13 1/2" x 10 1/2"), with a light to medium brown wooden frame ( 16" x 13"). Contrast is high while focus is sharp. Image, matte, and frame all very fine condition. No photographer noted. The Standard mill processed ore from the Standard Mine (originally named the Bunker Hill mine). Following the mine's success in 1877 and a major strike the following year, a boom resulted. Peaking between 1878 to 1882, the boom did not last long. The population peaked at 10,000 in 1880, was 3,000 in 1882, 1,500 in 1887, and falling into the hundreds thereafter. The introduction of cyanide leaching in 1895 extended the life of the Standard Mine until about 1916 [Ref: amwest-travel.com].
