Bodie, California, known for the extensive gold mining that took place in the mid to late 19th and early 20th centuries, is now a historic landmark which at its heyday boasted a population of 10,000. Bodie began its life upon discovery of gold by William Bodey in 1859 and hit its first peak in the 1870s. This town's history is riddled with the boom-bust cycle prevalent in many western mining towns. Bodie is situated south of the Mono Lakes on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The Bodie town site encompasses the Bodie Mining District, Bodie Bluff, Queen Hill, Taylor Gulch, and many mines including the Standard Mine, the Bodie Bluff Consolidated Mining Company, among other mines. The last residents moved out of Bodie after the final rush during WWII in 1946.
