Ultra Rare. The Bodie Mining Index. The Editor and Owner of this newspaper J. Townsend, earned the nickname "Lying Jim Townsend" while working for the Territorial Enterprise in Virginia City, where he also became acquainted with Samuel Clemens, AKA Mark Twain. Townsend's colorful career lead him to write for and manage other newspapers including the Reno Gazette, the Miner's Index in Lundy and the Golden Era in San Francisco where he met Bret Harte, who modeled his Truthful James story after Townsend. Others have maintained that Twain's character in his famous "Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" story was also modeled after Townsend. This publication is saturated with advertisements, promotions, and acclamations for local Bodie businesses. Establishments would promote their services head to head against their competitors. For instance The Occidental Hotel promotes themselves as the leading hotel in Mono County, boasting about their newly renovated and refurbished rooms. Scanning down the page, The Standard Hotel also strongly argues about their unbeatable meal prices, fantastic deals on wine and liquor, and only employing the best obtainable staff. Despite having damage in the right upper corner. Fair condition.
