Incorporated in September 1878 in San Francisco, Cert. # 123 issued September 30, 1878 to W.F. Main for 1000 shares; signed by Robert Barton, Presidient and A.F. Main. One of the pioneer locations of the Bodie District, the Ajax Gold and Silver Mining Company, was located in the very centre of the richest claim in the district. It adjoined the Mono Mine on the south and the Concordia Mine on the north as well as being west of the Goodshaw Mine, and east of the Champion. A large, double-compartment shaft was constructed, and was sunk to a depth of one hundred feet. The company was made up largely of men of means who were very successful in their undertakings, including this one. The boarder is simply decorated and has the company logo of the first letters of all words in the company name intertwined located on the bottom left corner. On the back are two stamps marked "Assessment No. 1 paid, Feb 17 1879 A. F. Main" and "Assessment No. 2 paid Jul 31 1879 A. F. Main".
