Incorporated in January of 1863, unissued, this mine was located in the Bodie Mining District in Mono County California. The President of the company, Amasa Leland Stanford, was an American tycoon, robber baron, industrialist, politician and founder of Stanford University. Stanford was one of the four major businessmen of Sacramento, California known popularly as "The Big Four". These men were the key investors in the Central Pacific Railroad, incorporated on June 28, 1861. Stanford was elected the president of the Central Pacific upon incorporation. In 1861, Stanford was nominated to run for Governor of California, and was elected. Stanford also served as a U. S. Senator from California.
