Hand-cancelled cover, no contents, addressed to Jas. W. Green, Gen. Del. San Jose, Calif. One red 2-cent postage stamp on top right corner. Stamp of San Jose, Calif. Jul 1932 Gen. Del. On reverse. Envelope is sealed and has a yellowed line down the right side about 3/4" from the side. This rare cover has an important story for philatelic and postal history collectors. The Bodie fire of 1932 destroyed most of the town, including the post office. When the Post Office burned, the cancellation devices were destroyed so for a few days after the fire the only method of getting mail out by the postmaster involved him hand cancelling each envelope with a manuscript Bodie cancellation. This is the first of these that we've ever seen. Extremely rare.
