Clayton District. Incorporated in 1863. Cert. #59, issued to Geo. W. Inslee for 50 shares. Signed by Robt. Mayers, president, and Alfred Mayers, secretary. Vignette of Lady Liberty holding an American flag is at left, and at center a vignette that looks like at etching, showing a mine tunnel with a miner pushing out an ore cart. A steep solitary pinnacle is to the left. Black border and print, with “$120,000” under print in red at center of certificate. There is an applied 25 cent Internal Revenue stamp on the left. U/C. Printer: Robbins & Co. Datelined San Francisco. 5 ½ x 9 ¾.” Some age staining overall, creases, and foxing on margins, but in one piece and overall in good condition for such an early certificate. Clayton was actually better known as an early coal mining region. Its Post Office was established in 1861. The town was named for British emigrant Joel Henry Clayton, one of the founders of the community.
