Skull and crossbones on the ribbon and is attached to medal. The word “Shellback” appears on the top. Medal has a pictorial of King Neptune on the front. Back has “Latitude 00000, Longitude 81.0000. 5-20-36. U.S. Fleet Adm. J.M. Reeves. This medal was given in line crossing ceremony. “When a sailor crossed the equator for the first time, sailors who had previously crossed the equator tested them for their capability to endure the long voyages, and at the end of the ceremony inducted them into a fraternity of seasoned sailors….”Famous Shellbacks include President Roosevelt, who took part in the ceremony in late 1936.
