Includes Introduction by J. Walter Fewkes, Chief. With the following papers: 1) "Exploration of the Burton Mound at Santa Barbara, California," Harrington, John P. "Social and Religious Beliefs and Usages of the Chickasaw Indians," Swanton, John R., "Uses of Plants by the Chippewa Indians," Densmore, Frances, "Archaeological Investigations--II," Fowke, Gerard. The Fowke paper includes discussion of the Lansing Skeleton (unearthed at a farm in Lansing, KS.) The farm owners, the Colcannon's were digging a storage warehouse for their fruit and unearthed what "at the time was believed to be the oldest skeleton found on the continent" [skyway.org]. Fowke's report is the result of the archaeological excavation of the area. Includes photographic plates of Chippewa collecting Basswood bark from water, drying coils of Basswood fiber, and dolls made from plant fibers.
