C18th dark green glass wine bottle with circular seal inscribed 'ZEALS' with the monogram 'WCG', 11.25ins. high (see illustration). William Chaffin, 1733-1818, came from a prolific South Wiltshire family who came into prominence as lawyers and landowners under the Tudors. The senior line, established at Mere and Zeals, failed in the male descent in 1730. The heiress Mary Chaffin married John Grove and their descendants took the name of Chafyn Grove. Another branch of the family settled at Chettle, and commissioned the building of Chettle House. Est.£200/300
