Figurine of Minerva, made England circa 1770-1775 by Derby / Chelsea Derby.
Stands 10 1/2inches high.
Figurine stands on an ornate, Rococco scrolling base, heavilly gilded.
Minerva, the goddes of wisdom. She is the roman counterpart of Athene, said to be a daughter of Zeus. At her feet the wise owl is perched on a pile of books and as she was also a warrior, she holds a shield upon which the head of the Gorgon Medusa is moulded. Behind her are bushes with tiny flowers and leaves.
The same figure is to be found in John and Margaret Cushion's book on porcelain, pg 136. It is unmarked, as were most pieces of the time.
Condition is generally very good, considering the age. The index finger of her right hand has lost it's tip. There is a kiln crack under the base, original to the piece. There are a number of losses to the leaves in the background (as is also very common in a piece of this age). Black light shows no other losses or restorations.
