"Great war-date diary belonging to Pvt. Alfred Elliott, Co. D, 16th New Hampshire Volunteers, comprising about 74pp. in dark pencil covering January 1, 1863 through August 9, 1863, with some describing routine camp news, but most about river patrol and light combat duty while serving on the Mississippi and Red rivers during the siege of Vicksburg. In part: ""...[Jan. 1]àfound the Mississippi anchored in sight of New Orleansàwent ten miles landed on the ground that Beauregard occupied when N. O. takenà[Jan. 10]àburied one soldier from the 26th Connecticutà[Jan. 12]...funeral of Lieut. Jones in the afternoonà[Apr. 14] àsent out as a reserve for the picketsà[Apr. 17]...went to the hotel to take care of a wounded officer of the 159 N.
