C.S.A. HOUSE APPOINTS PEACE COMMISSIONERS
Confederate House of Representatives imprint, Richmond, Dec. 16, 1864, 1p. 8vo., a resolution requesting that Jefferson Davis appoint 13 commissioners to tender to the U.S. Government: "...a conference fo negotiating an honorable peace...to obtain an immediate exchange of prisoners...the future conduct of the war...to mitigate its horrors and atrocities...". "Rebel Archives" stamp at top, a marginal chips, else very good. In the end, Davis appointed a three-man commission consisting of prominent advocates of negotiations: Vice-President Stephens, President pro tem of the Senate Robert M.T. Hunter, and Assistant Secretary of War John A. Campbell, a former U.S. Supreme Court justice. Thgey met at Hampton Roads with Lincoln and Seward. The conference was a dismal failure as Lincoln stated that the South's insistence on sovereignty was totally unacceptable.
