C. R. Savage Original Native American Photo 1870s
For your consideration is this original cabinet card photo of a Native American woman and her child, taken by Charles Roscoe Savage (1832-1909) in the 1870s. Charles R. Savage was born in Southampton, England in 1832. Savage established himself as an “ambrotypist“ in New York, a practitioner of a newer and more rewarding (though more cumbersome) photographic means than either daguerreotyping or calotyping, He died in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1909. This photo shows a Native American woman and her child posing for a photo in the studio. The woman carries her child on her back in a cradle style pouch. A belt is wrapped around her chest holding up the child on her back. The back of the photo is marked reading, "C.R. Savage / Art / Bazar / Salt Lake City / Views of the Great West". It shows good condition overall with little to no wear present and no signs of damage is noted. It measures 6 1/2" L x 4 1/4" W and weighs under 6 ounces.
