For your consideration is this set of four Franciscan Earthenware ceramic cups and butter dish from Gladding, McBean & Co. in California circa. 1945-1955. This set includes a butter dish, a sugar cup, a creamer cup and a tea cup. They are all a cream/beige color with green leaves painted all around the set. The green leaf pattern is know as the Ivy or Ivory pattern. Charles Gladding, Peter McGill McBean and George Chambers established Gladding-McBean & Co. in Lincoln, Placer County, Calif., in 1875. After merging with the Los Angeles Pressed Brick Co. in 1924, Gladding-McBean & Co. had plants in Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Alberhill and Glendale.Charles Gladding, Peter McGill McBean and George Chambers established Gladding-McBean & Co. in Lincoln, Placer County, CA, in 1875. After merging with the Los Angeles Pressed Brick Co. in 1924, Gladding-McBean & Co. had plants in Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Alberhill and Glendale. Franciscan Ware was produced at the Glendale (later Los Angeles) plant, which began life as the Pacific Art Tile Co. in 1902. Gladding-McBean chose the name “Franciscan,” feeling it was symbolic of California’s early history. Production of Franciscan earthenware ceramics with its brilliant glazed colors began in 1934. The set shows the company's markings on the bottom reading, "Franciscan / Oven-Safe / Made in California, USA / Hand Decorated / Gladding, McBean & Co." in black lettering. The set shows good condition with the only signs of obvious chips, cracks or damage present in the sugar dish lid. The butter dish measures 7 1/2" L x 3 1/8" W x 2 1/4" H, the sugar cup measures a top diameter of 3", 5 1/2" W and 4" H, the creamer cup measures a top diameter of 3", 5 1/2" W and 4" H, and lastly, the tea cup measures a top diameter of 3", 5 1/2" W and 3" H.
