This is an original circa 1910-1920's Plateau beaded men's belt from the personal ex-collection of L.A. Huffman. The belt consist of thick trade canvas with calico buffalo check trade fabric lining covered in glass trade seed beads of the period with an amazing whimsical floral design. Likely from the Flathead or Nez Perce tribes the piece was collected in Montana by Laton Alton Huffman (1854-1931). L.A. Huffman was a noted photographer in Montana. His collection was acquired by noted Montana collector John Fox. This piece is from the John Fox, Missoula, Montana collection. The belt is marked on the inside in fountain pen, "Miller Dervant" potentially the maker of the piece. The belt is trade thread sewn and has Indian tanned hide ties on the end. The beads include colors of greasy yellow, sky padre blue, semi-transparent dark blue, semi-transparent light and dark green, green, red, Cheyenne pink and semi-transparent rose. Some slight bead loss but mostly intact. Measures overall 44.5"L not including the 10-15"L additional hide ties, and is also 2"W.
