C. 1910 Duhamel Trading Post Sioux Ledger Art Tags
The lot features three original circa 1910-1940’s Sioux Ledger Art tag from the Duhamel Trading Post in Rapid City, South Dakota. The tags were done by the Sioux from the Pine Ridge and Rosebud Indian Reservations. The Duhamel Trading Post was established in Rapid City, South Dakota in 1907 by Pete Duhamel, born in 1839 in Canada and moved to Rapid City, Dakota Territory in 1879. A digital photograph is shown in the description of the inside of Duhamel Trading Post with the walls lined with Indian wares such as Indian blankets, rugs, sculpture, beadwork, leather goods and more. The lot shows three original tags, all of which made by and marked Dennison Manufacture Company, established in 1844. The tags likely date to circa 1910-1920’s. Each tag has Indian tanned hide ties, two of which have wound glass trade beads and painted shell or nut beads. The tags have original Ledger Art drawings, one showing a Sioux Warrior looking out from a hill top with shield and arrow quiver on his back and holding a lance spear in war regalia. Next shows a Sioux man smoking a peace pipe. Lastly shows a Sioux War Shield polychrome painted with feathers and in front of a Coup stick. Rare original pieces. From the Duhamel Trading Post and Pine Ridge Indian Reservation from the Sioux circa 1910-1940’s. Each tag without fringes is 4.25” by 2 1/8” with an additional 1.5”L fringe.
