This is an original photograph of U.S. 7th Cavalry Army Mules at Pine Ridge Wounded Knee circa 1890 by Trager & Kuhn. The photograph shows a team of Army Mules from the United States 7th Cavalry as well as several cavalry men on horseback, cavalry men on the ground posing and cavalry tent encampments in the background. The back is marked in graphite pencil, “Army Mules 7th Cavalry Pine Ridge 1890” and printed on the back, “Trager & Kuhn Photographic and Scenic Artists Headquarters Chadron, Nebraska.” Trager & Kuhn as well as Northwestern Photographic Co. are documented as photographing the U.S. control and eventual massacre of the Sioux Indians at Pine Ridge Wounded Knee. This photo shows some fading and wear to the corners, but overall displays beautifully and is a piece of history. Provenance: From the Jim Aplan Piedmont, South Dakota collection. The large boudoir card measures 8.5” by 5.25”.
