C. 1890- Hopi Cottonwood Palhik Mana Kachina Doll
The lot features a fantastic circa 1890-1920s Palhik Mana or Butterfly Maiden Kachina Doll from the Hopi Pueblo Native American Indians. The piece shows the Palhik Mana (Palik Mana), also referred to as the Butterfly Maiden, a kachina spirit in Hopi mythology. This example is carved of solid cottonwood root wood with natural mineral pigment paints showing crescent feet and in-turned hands. The piece has a wonderful hand carved and painted design which previously held plume feathers at the four corners of her tableta (headdress), which represents the rain clouds and fertility (not missing from age). The piece has a twine tie around its neck as well as around its waist with trade clothe, canvas or burlap skirt. Provenance: From a private museum Native American collection Paris, France. The hands of the kachina had previously been broken off, repaired then broken again and are now missing, also the tip of one foot is missing. There is some slight paint loss, which fits its early age, but other than this and the forementioned small damages, the piece is well kept. The piece measures 9.5” H by 6” W. Similar to the Hopi Palhik Mana Kachina dating to the 1920s and of a much smaller size which sold at our January 2022 sale for $1,197 (w/ bp) with this being a larger, earlier example.*
