C.1890-1900's Northern Plains Pony Beaded Pipe Bag
The lot features a circa 1890-1900's hide pony beaded pipe bag from the Northern Plains, likley from the Blackfeet of Northern Montana. The piece shows a thin Indian tanned hide hide with deep mineral pigment dyed coloring of dark red with beadwork across the openign and completely around the bottom section on both sides done in geometric pattern in 19th Century glass trade pony beads. The beadwork shows a typical Northern Plains geometric pattern, similar to other Blackfeet examples, in colors of greasy light blue, Cheyenne pink, chalk white, and black with a oblong diamond with maltese cross and outside border. The bag and beadwork is all sinew sewn, a sign of early age. The bag shows some loss to the hide with slight separation and cracking from honest age. The bottom shows long thicker Indian tanned hide fringes with a red ocher mineral pigment dye. The top edge is beaded ina seed bead 19th Century period correct cobalt. The bag is attributed to the Blackfeet of Northern Montana and is a nice Plains / Northern Plains example. Measures overall 25"L by 5 5/8"W.
