C. 1884 Champion Lady Shooter by Abraham Bogardus
This is an original photograph by Abraham Bogardus of Mrs. Y.T. Carpenter Champion Lady Shooter circa 1884. Abraham Bogardus (1822-1908) was a noted American daguerreotypist and photographer. Bogardus opened his first gallery in New York in 1846 and became very successful and in 1868 he assisted in the formation of the National Photographic Association and was its President for five years. In 1884 Bogardus was moved to 872 Broadway New York, the address on this piece, at which point he placed an ad to sell his business and retire. It is said 1884 was his last full year of work, but he officially retired in 1887. The front is marked A. BOGARDUS. PHOTO., 872 Broadway, COF. 18th St., NEW YORK.” The large format, large photograph is mounted on board with a gold beveled edge and shows Mrs. Carpenter holding an umbrella with a leather pouch, possibly ammo pouch, at her side. On the back is written in pencil, “Mrs. Y.T. Carpenter Champion Lady Shooter”. Provenance: From the Jim Aplan Piedmont, South Dakota collection. Measures 12 7/8” by 7.5”. Good condition.
