C. 1880 Sioux Beaded Tobacco or Coin Hide Pouch
The lot features a beaded hide tobacco or coin pouch flat bag from the Sioux Indians dating to circa 1880's. The bag is comprised of Indian tanned hide with remnants of red ocher mineral pigment dyed finish, having hand cut fringes framing the outside border, beadwork along the top opneing and beadwork on both sides in a Maltese cross and geometric patterns with period correct 19th Century glass trade seed beads. The beads include colors of greasy yellow, cobalt, semi-transparent dark green, chalk white, blue, and semi-transparent yellow all sinew sewn. The bag shows remnants of the hide tie at the top which is partially missing. The bag is all sinew sewn and shows some slight separation on top, stiffening of the fringe hide, and slightly stiffening hide with still supple soft bag body. Found to be an authentic Plains example from the 19th Century from the experts at Pook and Pook. Measures overall 8"L by 6.75"W.
