C. 1880- Northern Plains Catlinite Dagger Knife
This is a dag or dagger knife carved from catlinite of a nice full size dating to circa 1880-1890’s from the Northern Plains Native American Indians from the Sundog Bruce VanLandingham collection. The piece is carved of one solid piece of catlinite pipestone showing an unusual pink-ish color to deep red with speckled pink coloring as well. The knife shows a double edged blade in dag or dagger form showing a rectangular hilt / guard that is etched or carved on both sides. The grip shows a ridged or spiral cut design. The blade shows remnants of being etched and a punch dot carved design as well. The blade has been previously broken and repaired, an old repair. Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector, Bruce was also the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman, which was both part museum and gallery, this piece is directly from the collection. Measures overall 10 7/8”L by 1 3/8”W.
