C. 1880 Earl Russell Saddle - C.M. Russell Rela.
This is an unusual and interesting photograph, noted on the back as being Earl Russell circa 1880’s with Moran Saddle #302. The photograph shows a young man standing in front of a white horse wearing a Moran Saddle with early Cheyenne or Miles City half seat saddle with Sam Strang rigging. The back is handwritten in pencil, “Earl Russell #302 1880’s Moran Saddle $250.00.” The image is from the Jim Aplan collection, Jim believed this to be a relative of Charles Marion Russell and also believed this to be a photograph of C.M. Russell’s horse and saddle rigging. Charles Marion Russell’s was born to Charles Silas Russell and Mary Elizabeth (Mead) Russell and was brother to Silas Bent Russell (1860-1941). Silas was husband to Anne (Clendenin) Russell and the children they had is unknown. This potential could be a photograph taken in the early 1900’s of their child with his uncles horse and rigging, all presumed from Jim’s provenance. Provenance: From the Jim Aplan Piedmont, South Dakota collection. Measures 6.5” by 4.25”. Clear image on a cabinet card backing with gilt gold beveled edge. Good condition. U6.
