C. 1870- Sioux Quilled & Beaded Tipi Bag ex-Museum
This is an exceptional quilled and beaded buffalo hide tipi possibles bag from the Sioux dating to circa 1870-1880’s from the ex-collection of B.B. Museum. There are two tags attached hand written “Culbert CoLL Property of B.B. Museum 1941 $600 / Saddle Bag Beaded 118” and another tag “2605”. The bag is also stuffed with old newspapers, likely around when it was entered into the museum collection which date to 1938. The bag is comprised of Indian brain tanned buffalo / bison hide that is sinew sewn and adorned along the front with a classic Indian Wars period porcupine quilled banded design having natural pigment dyed red, lilac purple and natural. The bag also is sinew sewn with classic beadwork along the top flap and sides using all period correct glass trade seed cen beads. The beadwork shows colors of greasy green, chalk white, cobalt, and red white heart all being sinew sewn. The bag also shows hide fringes with rolled tin dangle jingle cones with red dyed horse tail hair. Tied onto the outside edges is also red dyed plume feathers. Truly a rare well kept bag with slightly stiffened hide but mostly supple with little bead loss, scarce having both porcupine quillwork and beadwork from a Museum collection. Measures overall 21”W by 13”H.
