C. 1862 Sioux Revolt Fort Snelling by Ben F. Upton
This is an incredibly rare, circa 1862 albumen photograph stereoview of Sioux Circular Cloud a prisoner at the internment camp at Fort Snelling during the great Sioux Uprising Revolt of 1862 from the Francoise Perriot collection. The U.S. Dakota War of 1862 was an armed conflict between the U.S. and several eastern bands of Dakota collectively known as the Santee Sioux. The aftermath had the Dakota surrender with 498 trials, 303 men being convicted and sentenced to death. Later President Lincoln commuted the sentences of all but 38. Some convicted men were sent to Mankato while others were sent to a prisoner compound at Fort Snelling. This image is in the Smithsonian collection NAA INV.09933200 and noted as “Circular Cloud” a Dakota Sioux Indian taken by Benjamin Franklin Upton and published by Fearon, R.N. Our example is written on the back “Circular Cloud” Sioux Prisoner twice. Other famous images were taken at this time such as the image of Apistoka at Fort Snelling concentration camp, c.1862–1863. Photograph by Benjamin Franklin Upton and Little Crow’s Sone 'Sa-Chau-Des-Her-Pa - "His Pipe"' (Wo-Wi-Na-Pe (One Who Comes in Sight)) sitting in front the exact same tipi / tepee and meat drying rack. Very clear well kept image with small crack on the back and slight edge wear.

Provenance: From the personal collection of Francoise Perriot (Françoise Perriot), noted historian author of the West and Native Americans. Perriot’s published works include such books as “Les Indiens et La Nature” (Indians and Nature) 2017, “La Conquête du Far West” (The Conquest of the Wild West) 2007, “Les Indiens d'Amérique du Nord” (North American Indians), “Guide Bleu : Etats-Unis Ouest Americain” (Blue Guide: United States West America). This piece and others come from her time collecting in Montana and the West, her book “Les Indiens et la nature” is one of the most notable in France documenting photographs of the west.
