C. 1860 Southern Plains Buffalo Scrotum War Rattle
This is a fantastic war rattle made from a Buffalo scrotum with polychrome painting dating to circa 1860s from the Southern Plains. The rattle is comprised of parfleche rawhide from the scrotum of a Buffalo / Bison which has been sinew sewn over some trade clothe and likely a wood handle. One side shows black and the other red, both mineral pigment paints. Provenance: From a private New Mexico Native American collection. Measures overall 7 7/8"L x 3.75"W x 3"D.*
