C. 1850 Great Lakes Gunstock Spontoon War Club
This lot features a gunstock war club with spontoon blade from the Great Lakes region dating to circa 1850-1870 attributed to the Eastern Iroquois tribe. The piece shows a classic gunstock war club handle carved from solid hardwood showing a heavy hot file branding in various sizes along with dark remnants of old mineral ochre paint. The piece shows a spontoon pattern blade forged from a rasp file showing a pointed double edge blade with rectangular forged shank being held into place with a poured lead pewter spike in the stock. The stock shows a pierced hole at the top and bottom which would have held a drop of beadwork, feathers or wrist throng. At the gripping area, there is an old museum tag marked with what appears to be Iroquois. Provenance: Found to be an authentic circa 1850-1870 Eastern Indians Iroquois gunstock war club by the experts at Morphys / James D. Julia. Truly a fantastic Indian Wars era and pre-Indian Wars era weapon. Measures overall 22.5”L x 7 1/8”W. Blade protrudes from the handle 4.75”L x 1.75” at its widest.*
