C. 1850 Delaware Beaded Hide Moccasins
The lot features a set of hide beaded moccasins dating to circa 1850 from the Delaware Native American Indians. The set is comprised of Indian tanned hide with old silk like trade clothe and red stroud overall accenteed by geometric period correct glass trade seed beads. The beadwork is in colors of amber, greasy yellow, semi-transparent green, semi-transparent red and chalk white. The set is trade thread sewn, common amongst Lenape Delaware Indian moccasins of the era. The set shows honest patina from age and use with supple soft hide, little bead loss and some loss to the fabric, but overall is well preserved for its early age. Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector, Bruce was also the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman, which was both part museum and gallery, this piece is directly from the collection. Each measures 8.75"L by 3.25"W by 2 7/8"H. Museum collection number E1061.
