C. 1850-1890 Hand Forged Treble-Hook
This lot is a circa late 1800's Hand Forged, cast Iron Treble-Hook (Grappling Hook). It was crafted by a Blacksmith, likely in the mid to late 1800's. These hooks were often used to retrieve buckets that had fallen into a well, climb or pull down walls, in Naval use they would be tossed onto the enemy ship to be pulled in closer for boarding, in fishing for large fish and some were used as meat hooks The blacksmith used 2 bars of metal. One bar made the loop and two of the tines, the second bar is attached to make the third tine. This was made by a very talented blacksmith. At one time in its use this treble-hook had been painted with red paint. This treble-hook measures 11 1/2” x 11” and shows some damage to one of the tines.
