C. 1830 Mantle Clock- Painting of Andrew Jackson Fabulous C. 1830 Mantle Clock With Reverse on Glass
Fabulous C. 1830 Mantle Clock With Reverse on Glass Portrait of Andrew Jackson on Horseback. This clock is from the U. I. "Chick" Harris Collection, and was the cover illustration on one of the eight catalogs when that legendary collection was sold by Slater's Americana in 1999-2001. It was always one of your writer's favorite pieces in the Harris Collection, one he almost kept for personal enjoyment at the time. Only the rambunctious presence of two toddlers in the house prevents us from taking advantage of this second opportunity to maintain personal possession!

Among all the early political and presidential 3-D collectibles, these impressive mantle clocks are among the most highly prized. Over three decades we have seen perhaps a dozen in all, picturing Jackson, Van Buren, Webster, Clay, W. H. Harrison, and Scott. Interestingly, nearly all have been different, both is the size and form of the clock, and in the reverse on glass portraits set into the doors. We know of three Jacksons; the other two have smaller and more conventional portraits, civilian busts. This wonderful highly colored and animated equestrian pose, with "Andrew Jackson" below, is unquestionably the finest presidential image seen on any of the clocks we have encountered. The paint tends to flake in these paintings, but this one remains in beautiful condition, with only a trivial bit of restoration at the lower left-hand corner. The clock itself is in nice display condition, although, like the vast majority of its type, it no longer runs. The interior label is from Northrop & Smith of Goshen, Connecticut (almost all of these mantle clocks, particularly the early ones, were made in Connecticut).

When offered in the Harris Collection catalog (the only time it has appeared for sale), this Jackson clock sold for $9116 against a pre-sale estimate of $4000-$6500, and was one of the most talked-about offerings from a collection filled with unique and important items. Measures 17" x 31" x 4.5".
