C. 1800 Nez Perce Elk Antler Hand Adze Flesher
This is an excellent circa early-to-mid 1800's hand carved and shaped Elk antler hide scraper hand adze / hide flesher from the Nez Perce of the Plateau Indians. The piece is constructed from an old Rocky Mountain Elk antler carved in a traditional hand flesher pattern with nearly right-angle carved end. The piece has a forged iron, likely gun barrel remnant, adze scarper with repaired and replaced Indian tanned hide wrappings, a later preservation. The adze shows several bands or kill lines cut into the handle as well as scrapings and carvings. The piece has a collection tag which is taped to the body marked, Hide Flesher Nez Perce ca 1800. The antler has a deep yellow coloring, indicative of its early age. Provenance: From a large Cowboy and Native American collection in Utah. Measures 12”L from end to end of blade. Total weight of 12 oz.
