Byzantine Empire. Revolt of the Heraclii, 608-610. Gold
Byzantine Empire. Revolt of the Heraclii, 608-610. Gold Tremissis (0.92g), uncertain mint. D N TibERI PP AV, diad. bust of Maurice Tiberius r. Rev. VICTORIA AVGV, cross potent, CONOB beneath. MIB 9 = BNP p. 199, 1; Sear 721, note. Very Fine and very rare, with some edge clipping.

This curious piece utilizes an obverse die from the reign of Maurice Tiberius and combines it with a reverse of the type which was adopted for the tremisses of Heraclius. One can only speculate on the circumstances of its issue, but the connection with the Heraclian Revolt is strengthened by the existence of similar tremisses with the reverse legend VICTORI CONSLB IB (MIB 7, Sear 721).
Estimated Value $7,000 - 9,000.
