Byzantine Empire. Phocas, 602-610. Gold Solidus (4.42g), Uncertain mint. D N FOCAS PERP AVG, crowned, dr. and cuir. bust facing, holding gl. cr. Rev. VICTORIA AVGU IE, angel facing, holding long P-headed cross and gl. cr., CONOB in ex. Unpublished. Sear 677 var. Good very fine, very rare and interesting, light graffiti in obverse and reverse fields.

The curious ending of the reverse legend (IE = 15?) cannot indicate an officina, an indiction, or a regnal year. If it is a mint mark then Hieropolis (= Jerusalem?) is a possibility, though the style of the engraving does not appear to be of that region.
Estimated Value $1,700 - 2,200.
