Byzantine Empire. Leo III Alone, 717-720. Silver Hexagram struck from solidus dies (2.68g), Constantinople, 6th officina. Helmeted and cuir. bust three-quarter face to r., holding spear and shield. This was struck with an obverse die of a type which was never adopted for the gold coinage, though it was used as model for the bronze denominations (cf. Grierson, Num. Chron. 1965, p. 184). Good Very Fine and very rare, a previously unrecorded officina mark, several hairline striking cracks.
