Condition details: This piece is in very good condition. With the unaided eye there are no issues. Closer inspection under ultraviolet light reveals normal fluorescence of artist's pigments and no signs of restoration. The work is mounted under glass and has not been inspected out of the frame. The piece is framed in a brown frame with a cream linen liner, gold fillet, and a cream matting. The matting is signed; ‘The Charge and Death of Roman Nose, War Chief’ From the Sketch Book of Byron B. Wolfe. The frame is in very good condition with normal wear. Verso on the back of the piece: ‘THE CHARGE AND DEATH OF ROMAN NOSE, WAR CHIEF’ TIME – 1868 PLACE ARICKAREE FORK OF THE REPUBLICAN RIVER IN THE NORTH EASTERN CORNER OF COLORADO. REF – THE SOUTHERN CHEYENNES by Donald J. Berthrong. NOTE- Roman Nose war chief of the Cheyennes was persuaded to lead the charge against Col. Forsyth and scouts dug in on a sandy island on the Arickaree – he said ‘I shall die today, my war bonnet has lost it’s protective medicine! His food was lifted with an iron tool. Roman Nose unaware of this ate some of the bread, unable due to time to perform purification rites. He lead the charge and was shot and died at sundown.
