American Presbyterian minister (1819–1901) who served as a Chaplain of the United States Senate during the American Civil War. ALS signed “B. Sunderland,” eight pages on four lightly-lined sheets, 5 x 7.5, July 6, 1861. Letter to Senator Henry S. Foote, in part: “The sermon was delivered and proposed in the ordinary ground of my parochial duties and has no special importance but that which has been given it by the unprovoked attack of this to our unknown correspondent…I might confer to Senators Johnson of Ten.—Trumbull of Ill.—Chandler of Michigan—Hale of N.H.—with all of whom during the last 3 months at anytime or another I have freely conversed and expressed myself with. These gentlemen will doubtless remember the conversations and must know that I am…a lover of country, in for the war, and ready for the sacrifices.” Sunderland identified at bottom of signed page in an unknown hand. Affixed along the left edge to a slightly larger sheet. A vertical fold passing through a single letter of the signature, slight show-through from writing to opposing sides, and missing right corner tips to two sheets, otherwise fine condition.
