Byron B. Wolfe (1904-1973) (CA). Free Trappers of The Snake River. 11 ¼" x 16 ¼" original watercolor. Signed and dated 1970 lower left, CA. Titled and signed on mat, with fully detailed remarque on mat along lower right with notation: From the sketch book of Byron B. Wolfe. Verso: Old O'Brien's Art Emporium, Scottsdale, AZ sticker. States: Title, medium and artist. Index card referencing the era and location of the painting. Time: 1800-1840's. Place: Yellowstone Basin. Reference: "Whoop Up Country" by Paul F. Sharp and "The American Fur Trade of the Far West" by Hiram Martin Chittenden. Note: Free trappers were independent traders who carried on trade with Indians, trading tobacco, salt, sugar, axes, knives, blankets, colorful cotton fabrics, etc., for beaver, wolf, buffalo and other fine pelts or ropes. Some trappers married into tribes, which improved their trade relations.
