Byrom, John. The Universal English Short-Hand, manuscript, title and 123 pages, contemporary calf-backed marbled boards, worn, 8vo, [late 18th century] John Byrom, FRS (1691-1763), graduate of Trinity College and poet, devised & gave lessons in short-hand. In 1742 an Act of Parliament gave him ‘the sole right’ of publishing his method, but he died before it was published in 1767, having been edited posthumously by his friends. The work was printed by J. Harrap of Manchester. Many of Byrom’s papers were later published by the Chetham Society in Manchester £100-200
