Rare pictorial bill of lading for bags of coffee and sugar sent from New York to Lawrence, Kansas in October 1865. Double sided. 11 x 8.5" The Butterfield Overland Despatch was a stage and freight line established in 1865 to carry passengers, mail, and express freight between Atchison, Kansas, and Denver, Colorado, during the Colorado gold rush. It followed parts of the Smoky Hill Trail and offered one of the quickest overland routes to the Rocky Mountain mining camps. Financial difficulties and heavy Indian attacks soon forced its sale to Ben Holladay in 1866, after which the line was absorbed into his larger Overland Stage empire.
