This is an extremely rare issued example of this note as most other known others are remainders. This note, number 1, was issued on January 1, 1870, and is signed by G. Collier Robbins. Robbins had a jewelry business in St. Louis in 1848 before becoming the mayor of Portland, Oregon where he also owned a jewelry and assaying business, and manufactured quality silverware. By 1870 he took over management of the Butter Cup mine at Eureka, and by 1903 he was a mining engineer and assayer in San Diego. Printed by the National Bank Note Co., this note features detailed engravings of a shepherd and a cow on the front. There are folds, edge chips, archival tape repairs, and soiling. 3 x 7" Also included is a hand-written draft from Ruby City (Eureka County) with G. Collier Robbins signature as superintendent. Also rare. Located in New York Canyon near Eureka, the Butter Cup mine was a real producer beginning in 1867. By the 1870s silver and gold coins were scarce and had to be shipped in weekly to meet pay role. So the Butter Cup management decided to issue this scrip in order to reduce the volume of coins every week. Not only was this illegal but the miners refused to accept anything but gold and silver for their wages.
