Butch Cassidy & The McCartys Pose For a Photo. I suppose that one method of measuring success in your chosen field is to have Paul Newman portray you in a multiple Oscar-winning blockbuster movie. If that's the case, then George "Butch" Cassidy (real name: Robert Leroy Parker) must have been a pretty good castle rustler and bank robber. This vintage carte de visite pictures Butch with his early bank robber partners, Tom and Bill McCarty. All three of these gentlemen grew up on Mormon ranches in Utah but somehow went astray. By many accounts, it was Tom McCarty who led Butch into a life of crime. Bill was killed in a bank robbery in 1892. His brother escaped and moved to Montana to herd sheep where he met his end in 1900 in a gunfight after a quarrel. Butch Cassidy did some prison time, 1894-96, for stealing horses. After his release, he organized a group of outlaws known as the Wild Bunch (hey- that would make a good movie title!), robbing more than a dozen banks and trains over the next five years. Cassidy and another member of the gang, Harry Longabaugh (better known as the Sundance Kid), moved to New York in 1901 and then to Argentina, fleeing the law. They resumed their careers as ranchers and outlaws in South America before being killed (by most accounts, anyway) by soldiers in Bolivia in 1908/9. Most of us know that part of the story from the above-mentioned film.

This incredible photo shows these three career criminals dressed in their best duds and posed for a formal full-length portrait with Butch seated between the two brothers. It was likely taken in either Colorado or Utah around the time of their first train robbery. The image size is approximately 2.5" x 4" and it is in excellent condition. What a great chance to own a rare image of this legendary western hero/villain. Accompanying will be a binder containing research material regarding this photo and the three men pictured.
