Bust Dollars 1799 B-22 PCGS AU50

Bust Dollars 1799 Bolender-22. PCGS graded About Uncirculated 50. Reiver Rarity-5. Both sides exhibit mottled light gray toning, with darker charcoal coloration on the obverse around the stars, lettering and devices. Typical of the die variety, Miss Liberty's hair and drapery lack full definition. Also typical, the reverse is mostly well struck, save the eagle's breast feathers above the shield, which are weak as a result of the severely broken die, and curiously, the cloud at the right is almost flat, as are the lower stars directly to the left.

Bolender-22 (BB-168) is a well known die variety, easily recognizable because of the massive horizontal die break slightly above center, extending from rim to rim. On the obverse, there are additional breaks at the date and still another connecting stars 11, 12 and 13 at the lower points. Its significance as a R-5 variety is augmented by the almost total absence of examples grading above Extremely Fine. This impressive PCGS graded AU50 example ranks among the very finest known, if not the finest.
