Burroughs: First State of Tarzan, Lord of Jungle
Edgar Rice Burroughs: 1928 First State of Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle. (Chicago: A. C. McClurg & Co., 1928), first edition, first state, 377 pages, green cloth binding with black lettering on the spine and front cover, 8vo (5" x 7.5"), original dust jacket (in protective Mylar). Illustrated by J. Allen St. John. Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle was the final Tarzan title published by McClurg, and in the first state, it is one of the scarcest McClurg Tarzans. The original print run consisted of four states totaling only 7,500 copies. It is not known exactly how many of each state were published, but in any case, it wasn't many. This is an exceedingly rare title, especially with the original dust jacket. The book is in very good condition, with minimal shelf wear, small remnants of tape residue at the endpapers, and slight toning of the textblock edges. The original dust jacket is good, with a 1" tear at the top of the front panel, minor chipping at the head of the spine, a small stain at the top of the rear panel, and evidence of tape repair at four spots on the inside of the jacket. Considering the rarity of both the first state book and the original jacket, this particular example of Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle is fit for any Burroughs collection.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
