U.S. Civil war Burnside single shot percussion carbine, Model 1864, aka "5th model". It is a .54 caliber carbine manufactured by the Burnside Rifle Co., in Providence, Rhode Island. Single Shot, Rotating Block, Breech Loaded Percussion carbine. Lockplate marked "BURNSIDR RIFLE Co / PROVIDENCE RI"; top of frame is marked "BURNSIDE PATENT / MODEL OF 1864". 21" barrel with dovetailed front blade, rear sight presents a “V” notch in the down position and when flipped up gives a “V” notched aperture for 300 yard and an additional 500 yard notch. Saddle ring, sling swivel and various inspector letter stamps. There are two cartouches on the left wrist; "GC" (arsenal sub-inspector George Curtis) and "TKL" (Thomas K. Laley) . "GC" is also stamped in small block letters on the underside of the forearm. Original dull blue finish is about 60%, mostly on the barrel, upper tang, screw heads and breech block, the receiver and lock plate are mostly a brown patina with traces of the original case colors. matching serial number on receiver & breech block, markings and cartouches are clear. The bore is overall very good/bright with good rifling with a couple of patches of light pitting, the action is smooth and the wood is good/sound with scratches/dings, there are a couple of small chips on the left wrist where it meets the receiver. Nice condition for a Civil War carbine.
