Burnside Civil War Carbine
Burnside Civil War Carbine. 21" round barrel is 54 caliber and has a fair bore with some pitting. The lockplate is marked, "Burnside Rifle Co. Providence RI" in two lines. This is a third model with the solid, unhinged breechblock; the serial number is 3165 and it appears on both the breeckblock and the top of the frame. All metal surfaces are silver with some very light surface pitting. The wood stocks are sound but have numerous dents and dings. The left side of the buttstock is carved with a large "JR" below that is the name "Elijah Rathburn" and the date "Feb 1865." There is a letter Z stamped in the wood behind the lower tang. It's rare to find a Civil War carbine identified with a specific soldier and being a third model makes it doubly rare as only 1500 were made.
Estimated Value$1,500 - 2,500.
