The Burnside was America’s first metallic cartridge rifle and was produced in 5 models from 1857 through the end of the Civil War in 1865. A .54 caliber percussion breechloading rifle. This is the 5th model with the guide screw in the side of the breech. Marked "Burnside Rifle Co Providence RI" in right side lock plate and "Burnside Patent March 25, 1856" on top of receiver. Originally blued finish with 21" round barrel, Wood stock and forend. The serial number is matching on top of the breech block, receiver and inside of the breech block lever. Numerous government sub-inspector initials are located on various metal parts throughout the carbine, including the letters S, H, T and C. These marks remain clear and crisp in all locations. The gun retains the original front blade and folding leaf rear sights, as well as the original sling ring bar & ring, and the sling swivel on the lower toe of the buttstock. The bore is very good/bright with strong rifling, the action is smooth with tight lock-up, two cock hammer action is strong, the wood is overall good/sound and the finish is a dull blue in places with most turned a gray/brown patina. No pitting observed. The barrel band is missing with coiled wire in it's place.
NRA Condition-Good/Barrel Band. Antique Firearm.
