Burnside 4th Model Percussion Carbine, #8861, .54 cal., 21'' blue barrel, case hardened frame, crisply cartouched walnut stock and forend. These Carbines were designed by Ambros E. Burnside, a famous Union General during the Civil War. This type Carbine armed many Cavalry regiments during the Civil War, including the 1st Mich., 7th Ohio, three regiments of PA Cavalry, and four regiments of Ill. Cavalry. This example remains in excellent condition showing little or no use, with only light marks and oil darkening from age. Minor scuffs and scratches are predominantly in actioning areas, the deepest emanating from the forward upper tang screw. Stock is nicely cartouched in two places with only minor pressure dings and open grain. Barrel, breechblock, and upper tang retain approx. 98%+ their original blue. Case hardened frame, hammer, and buttplate retain vivid hues above 95%. Action is excellent, bore is mirror bright. Est.: $4,500-$6,000. (Antique)
